Deadheads for Obama

Max, February 1st, 2008

Just got my tickets for a SuperBirthdayTuesdayEve concert for Obama at the Warfield in SF featuring Bob Wier, Mickey Hart, & Phil Lesh and friends. That should be a majorly spirited occasion. Expect a word or two from me in this forum.

Looks like tickets are still available gone.

Just reading an article about the guitarist I’ll be seeing tonight with the dead remnants and came across this insightful graph which I’ll capture here:

“The odd key changes and odd times are definitely stuff I’m not particularly used to, and before we started playing these warm-up gigs, I was sort of fearful of it: ‘I don’t know what I’m going do. I don’t know if I can hang with these guys.’ Then we did the first gig and I thought, ‘That’s not too bad; in fact it’s really fun.’ Phil gave me the best advice—he told me, ‘You just have to give yourself permission to do it.’ And that’s really true, because a lot of musicians worry about what everybody else is going to think about it, and they don’t give themselves permission to ‘step out.’ That’s always been my problem a little, and Phil sort of fixed that with one line.”

My feeling is that this is a key to understanding the creative blocks that chronically afflict me. If you all start noticing I’ve become particularly obnoxious you’ll know it’s because I finally gave myself permission to do so.

(btw- I think begemotya does not suffer from this problem)

I’m blogging from a demo station at the Sony store at the Metreon in SF. In an hour or so I’ll be meeting my wife before we go over to the Dead show. I had a stroll by earlier and saw lots of classic crusty old heads ready to soak in the glory of the first show in four years featuring Mickey, Bob & Phil. While I waited I spotted a young lady vending some yummy looking cookies. They were rather expensive but I purchased a couple. She said something about special herbal ingredients so I assume they’ll be worth it.

Disco with the Dead, Inc.! Maybe they could get Oprah up there. Excepting Lesh the hack, all the real musicians of the GD (er, the one real musician–Keith Godchaux) are already really dead, so now they got hired hands.

    It’s raining searing envy…

Re: post #2, maybe Bege does give himself permission from time to time, but is that necessarily a good thing? I think our Most Banished One, He Who Shall Remain Nameless, also has learned the fine art of giving himself permission–and look where that got him.

Anyhow, we all hope you and Sugarnaya Magnolyechka have a great time tonight.

    ps., happy birthday!!

pps. It is tonight, no? Today is both Super(Phatt) Tuesday and 2/5, right? So, what’s with the date/time stamps on this thread? Mr. Admin?? Or maybe I have overfulfilled my quota of tasty cookies for the current five-year plan?

i still remember calling you a hippy before actually knowing you too well, and apologizing.

and you said it was okay.

    astute?

i looked for raison d’etre beer in folsom on my way back from backcountry skiing in the storm on sat, but alas, i wasn’t fruitful in my search.

no ommegang either. that’s corncob style, good stuff.
