A noble Endeavour
I didn’t get to see this shot in person, but it did fly by us here in Redwood Shores and I got a grainy shaky video from my iPhone not worth an upload. It was a beautiful site, though, and got me a little misty. I hope that our human culture is capable of equalling and far-surpassing the shuttle program and that I get to see the fruits of it while I still walk the Earth.
Of course, a tiny part of me was hoping for something like this to happen:

I was driving to work when it flew over Sacramento, and I didn’t know what was happening.
Truckers stopped dead in the lane and swung out to look. Thousands of people were ringing the access roads and the causeway wetlands, all looking into the sky.
I thought it was The End. I really did.
Then I saw that beautiful bird fly over the freeway, with its jets swarming around it. Damn, that was gorgeous.
Glad it wasn’t The End.
