Apparently Diebold's problems aren't limited to Maryland, Georgia or Alaska — what a shocker. Down in the Sunshine State, during a week of early voting before next week's nationwide midterm election, certain Diebold machines have been registering some votes for Democrats as selections for the Republican candidate. For instance, Gary Rudolf, a voter at a polling site near Ft. Lauderdale, tried to vote for gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis (D); however, when the Diebold machine gave him the final review screen, it showed his vote was about to be cast for Charlie Crist (R). The problem took three tries to get resolved with the help of a local poll worker. Mary Cooney, a Broward County Supervisor of Elections spokeswoman, informed The Miami Herald that it's "not uncommon for screens on heavily used machines to slip out of sync, making votes register incorrectly. Poll workers are trained to recalibrate them on the spot — essentially, to realign the video screen with the electronics inside. The 15-step process is outlined in the poll-workers manual." Huh? How exactly does a computer — one that is being used heavily for one day a year, and not a $100 PDA — "slip out of sync" ? Further, no one in Broward County is even sure how large of a problem this is "because there's no process for poll workers to quickly report minor issues, and no central database of machine problems." Is it any wonder that major candidates are urging voters to vote the analog old-fashioned way?
Voter Intimidation Schemes are one thing. Institutionalized Election Fraud is another. This is Treason against the United States Of America. And it is just the tip of the iceberg.
GODDAMN THEM ALL TO HELL FOR THIS. I do not support the death penalty — but I favor an exception in this case. Diebold, ES & S and Sequoia need to be SHUT DOWN.

Mildly channelling ‘zoso, there is one point I’ve heard raised that makes me wonder about this. Why would anyone who was trying to hack the machine to switch votes display the proof of the switch to the user? In the famous Princeton study the machines switched the vote imperceptibly. Could they be that (die) bold? It seems unlikely.
OTOH- the ‘out of synch’ argument seems pretty far-fetched. How often do ATM screens get out of synch and give you more money than you asked for?

I think the flipping is essentially a decoy for the deeper stuff, designed to both steal votes where possible, and to be a cruel mock — i.e., look what we can do, and no one will care. The fact that it is always to the Republican's advantage is exactly the same pattern as the election of 2004, where the exit poll skews were always against the Democrats. That similarity is impossible to dismiss — if there is no intent, then why no random distribution of error? This is a machine — using simple code that has been 'needlessly' complicated. 1's and 0's. In and Out. Maybe a mistaken digit in the 12th decimal placeholder, right? It has become a classic tactic for them that they do not employ a tactic — they employ one hundred tactics. Several upfront and easily-detectable schemes that cover much larger tabulator virus-work would be the norm, here — quietly siphoning votes from the innattentive, and resisting correction for the impatient. And outrage would be met with statements like 'Could they be that (die) bold? It seems unlikely.' Perfect.
The errors always favor Republicans. Diehard fundamentalist Republican Bush Pioneers count 80% of the votes in the United States. The software has never been examined by ANY United States election official, ever. Diebold and ES&S routines were written by convicted felons. Unauthorized patches have been routinely installed during both elections and recounts, as multiple Diebold employees and local election supervisors have testified to. Phhhtt.
Your point is well-taken. But they fear nothing, as long as they control election results.
