Confessin’ the blues: into the future… darkly!

Watchmen: The Silk Spectre (’then’ and ‘now’)

There are many good quotes from the darkly brilliant film “Watchmen” (recommended), but one in particular (oddly not to be found on the IMDb ‘quotes’ page) has haunted me a bit since I first heard it. ‘Sally Jupiter’ is an ageing retired superhero… the ‘Silk Spectre’, now a somewhat bitter and alcoholic but more an ironic and cynical woman. At one point, she intimates… peering over the rim of a martini glass at her adult daughter Laurie (’Silk Spectre 2′):

“Every day the future grows a little bit darker, but the past just keeps getting brighter.”

I really gotta admit, that line hit me right where I live! The recent “Albik Trizz” ‘revival’ (LOTS of response!), hell, even “Jupiter Sheep” is now almost 20 years in the rear-view mirror! The fact that the music and related comments I post seem to all be of 1950’s to 1980’s (at the latest!) vintage… Even my Cub Scouts ‘career’ fer christ sake!…
What’s going ON here??

Well, the simple answer is of course… I’m getting OLD! ;-}

My son Ian, is grown and well off into his own adventures, and although we get on very well, I can’t escape the suspicion that much of the time I’m being ‘humoured’ just a bit, even though ‘the kid’ seems genuinely interested in my music and art exploits… (he definitely DID pick up my affection for ’60’s R&B! ;-})

From a more ‘interior’ viewpoint, the inevitable tail-off of testosterone driven insanity is actually somewhat refreshing… and the fact that I can get a little ‘misty’ over a poignant moment in a film I count as a GOOD thing… As well as a historical sense of perspective (occasionally) conferring a degree of understanding unattainable from book and film… So there truly ARE compensations! Although I AM cursed with that “Oh NO, not AGAIN!” feeling more than I’d like!

So I’m really NOT cryin’ in my beer… I think I’ve still got a few more gems to mine from the ‘canyons of my mind’ (how’s THAT for a ’60’s reference? ;-})… And you know WHAT? I just really want to know WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! I’d sort of like to live to see us land humans on Mars!

And happily, beyond a slight ‘paunch’ (love that word if not the fact!) and bad teeth (a symptom of my Anglophilia? ;-}), all my ‘parts’ still seem to work remarkably well, although there IS this little twinge in my left shoulder… but you really don’t want to hear about that…

(DO you? ;-})

    We’re playing the Spotlight Lounge right now. Senrab just stopped playing ‘Satellite’, and is clicking his sticks for the restart. At the bar, a man in a cowboy hat has taken offense to my prior comments and is telling the bartender that he’s going to kill me.

    Meanwhile, Max is falling off a firetower.

    Hey! I BUILT that tower… And it’s a credit to my engineering skill (IMHO) that I timed that one strut’s failure criteria so NICELY! ;-}
    But you know what we say on the stage…
    “BREAK A LEG!”
    (Ouch!)

    Sorry Sky, but the fall can’t be blamed on a bad strut. I willfully - though in a dream - chose to step over the rail and into oblivion. What can I say. We Scots are a little erratic.

    BTW: Wolfgang Amadeus (the little Gerry fucker) actually COMPOSED like that! ALL AT ONCE! Symphony in a Second! OUT OF TIME!
    Then it was just a CHORE to actually bother to WRITE IT DOWN…
    Oops wait a second/millenia… got a big solo bit right HERE…
